If you really loved me, youd open the pod bay doors, Hal! Her: Written and directed by Spike Jonze. Hard to encapsulate the vast emotional terrain touched upon in the science fiction future of Her. Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) inhabits a golden coastal techtopia where like the only wants are the eternal ones: love and connection. His new sentient and learning OS Samantha (Scarlett Johanssen) is as hungry for emotional experience as a teenager and learns to love only slightly slower than she accesses the whole of other knowledge available to her through her network. While Theodore has to overcome the baggage that comes from his lifetime of relationships, Samanthas is first love. Its a sad story and a little predictable in its ending. Its affecting though, and a reasonable addition to Jonzes body of work realizing what might have been thought of as unfilmable projects, like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. Takeaway image: an entire city of solitary people, talking to themselves and staring at the palms of their hands--not even futuristic, I know.
