If you teach a Holocaust-related course, I highly recommend that you devote at least one class to the Jewish exile in Shanghai. I used some of the material below and class discussions were good. I even staged “Fremde Erde”/ “Foreign Soil” (a play set in 1941 about two former Jewish émigrés in Shanghai) for my German Drama Production course. Shanghai Ghetto (2002, Documentary, dir. Dana Janklowicz-Mann and Amir Mann) Port of Last Resort (1998, Documentary, dir. Joan Grossman, Paul Rosdy) Exile Shanghai (Documentary, 1997, dir. Ulrike Ottinger. Hard to get) Ursula Krechel, Shanghai: fern von wo (2008) Franziska Tausig: Shanghai Passage: Emigration ins Ghetto (2007) Hans Schubert and Max Siegelberg, Fremde Erde Stefan Schomann: Letzte Zuflucht Shanghai: Die Liebesgeschichte von Robert Reuven Sokal und Julie Chenchu Yang (2008) There are a lot more if you just search in Amazon or your library holdings.
