DATE: Dear Mr. Kelly, I write to you out of urgent concern regarding State Route 14 and more specifically, the stretch of that highway that falls within Yates County. There have been a growing number of serious accidents – several of them fatal – along this stretch over the past ten years. The combination of speed, potential intoxication, driver distraction, farm equipment traffic, unfamiliarity with destinations along the route, and the sheer volume of traffic make this road a serious safety hazard. As a local resident and/or business owner (CHOOSE ONE) I respectfully submit the following request of the State Department of Transportation with regard to State Route 14 in Yates County: 1) Complete a speed study specifically during a time of year that represents the large influx of visitors to our region such as the late summer and/or fall seasons; 2) Investigate the safety of passing zones, especially those that occur just before or after intersections, along curves in the road, and where winery/business driveways are present; 3) Seriously consider the need for special signage drawing driver’s attention to heavy traffic areas, dangerous intersections, and business/residential driveways that are located along curves and near intersections; and 4) Any other steps that the State Department of Transportation may see fit in order to address the state of this extremely dangerous highway.
