There is a proposal for three lots of aquaculture leases in the bay- aka farming things like mussels out in that beautiful big blue. The first lease is approximately 460 meters north of Orions Beach in Vincentia covering a total size of 10 hectares the other two leases are both 20 hectares in size being 1.4 km and 1.9 km south west of Callala Bay. Please keep in mind a football field is the equivalent of 1.08 hectares. Thats huge. That my friends is a grand total of 54 football fields. They are saying that the estimated cost excluding GST to complete the construction is $762,610. When the GST is added youre looking at roughly $838,871. One of the pluses about this potential construction is more jobs for the area because theyre is a high unemployment rate. Upon further reading, this development will only bring an estimated maximum of 15 full time positions. 15, and they only offer these roles for the 6 months of construction. A band aid solution, no? As for ongoing full time employment youre looking at about 12 directly related positions. Of course there are environmental side effects to this. With the potential of permanent loss of seagrass in the effected areas there will be a mass of nutrient reduction that is essential to the functioning ecosystem. That means no more dolphins down near plantation point. Shellfish leave behind a high concentration of solid waste aka shellfish shit. A natural pollution yes but a pollution nonetheless.
