If you want to know why we cannot have a rational discussion of health care finance in this country, look no further than the tax exclusion for employer sponsored health coverage. This is what allows people like certain members of the Cruz family (and the Senators spokeswoman) to claim that their nominally private health coverage costs taxpayers no money, while people who are use government health insurance programs (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, the new exchanges, etc.) are guilty of government dependency. (Well leave aside the fact that Goldman Sachs, where Mr.s Cruz works, is probably only in existence today due to TARP, so any claims by Goldman Sachs employees that they are rugged individualists who do not benefit from government subsidies should be taken with at least a shaker full of salt...).
