If you watch any TV at all, youll get the impression that the sky is falling, that everyday things are causing all sorts of health problems, etc. This morning there was a segment on BPA, how using hand sanitizer and then touching things such as a sales receipt can cause the BPA from the sales receipt to be absorbed into your body at an extremely high rate, that if you ate a french fry after touching the sales receipt you ingested BPA, and on and on and on. Faintly alarmed -- I even washed my hands after touching the plastic bottle my Flintstones vitamins are in -- the first thing I did when I sat down at the computer was to research BPA. Hmmm. Probably what triggered the TV segment was an article yesterday in the Wall Street Journal that examined a paper making the above claim about hand sanitizer and sales receipts. Turns out the methodology of the study was questionable, and the paper didnt present just the study but made a huge leap assuming BPA is the cause of a lot of health problems that medical trials simply have not been able to link. BPA is quickly excreted from our bodies. Is BPA good for us? No. Is it actively harming us? Not likely. OTOH -- Im beginning to wonder if ANY chemical is good for us. Ive begun having an allergic reaction to preservatives, particularly those found in soup mixes. I cant isolate any particular one, because so many different chemicals are used. But I eat the soup, and my lips and mouth blister and turn black as if from chemical burns. That isnt a good look :-/. It also appears Im having an allergic reaction to some cleaners used in public bathrooms. I walk into the bathroom and have instant congestion -- congestion that fades within a couple of minutes after leaving. You cant get away from chemicals. I cant go the rest of my life without entering a public bathroom. Whats a woman to do???? -- Linda H.
