If you watch the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, or Science Channel you might already be aware that it is Shark Week. One of the most unique features of sharks (and rays) are their skeletons made from cartilage. Sharks diverged from bony fish about 400 million years ago, while land-based vertebrates diverged 300 million years ago. This means were more closely related to fish, than fish are to sharks. Having a cartilaginous body makes sharks more lightweight (comparably) and flexible, giving them the ability to make quick, powerful turns and become to oceans top predators.
