If you were watching TV on Sept. 17, 1967, there is a good chance you saw The Doors on the Ed Sullivan Show. We did a post a little while ago with Ray Manzarek telling what happened. But also that night…… The Who made their first American network television appearance on The Smothers Brothers Show. The show was taped on Sept. 15th and aired on the 17th. Their first song was I Can See For Miles. They came off as a nice clean cut Rock and Roll band. For their 2nd song, they played My Generation. We can only imagine how surprised everybody was to see how they ended the song. It was shall we say, explosive. Drummer Keith Moon had a small explosive device in his drum kit. It was basically what was known then as a flash pot. What no one knew was that Keith had packed it / had it packed with way more powder than normal. Pete Townshend was a little too close to Keiths drums when the bomb / flash pot went off, his hair got burnt and Pete has said his hearing was never the same after that. (There are those who think Petes hearing problem had more to do with the very loud stage volume they used to play at). Heres both songs from 47 years ago tonight. youtube/watch?v=FYkGimCrcRg
