If you would, just try to spend some of Monday seeking out and listening to, say, a half a dozen Martin Luther King speeches and talks besides the “I have a Dream” Speech. Listen intently to the overwhelming profundity of the man’s thoughts in other speeches as he speaks. Consider the era that he lived in and his place in history. Note that while he was universal in his scope and range, he was not color blind . He knew that his people were being dealt an unfair blow by institutions as well as by bigoted, racist people. Towed a difficult line in his unique struggle for equanimity, as well as equality. His was a perilous mission. Don’t be lulled to sleep or complacency by the transcendent resonance of “I Have a Dream”. Listen also for the sadness, anger, fear and razor sharp intellect in speeches like “The Vietnam Speech”, the “How Long, Not Long” speech, the “Mountain Top” (his last speech) and the “Eulogy: The Drum Major Instinct” speech. Become more of a student of history rather than a fair weather observer whose just happy to have Monday off. - Theo The Thinker -
