If your kids are making those goofy bracelets that are loomed with rubberbands.......read this: Addie came home from school with one on her wrist. Most bracelets fall off as she doesnt have the cognitive ability or the fine motor skills to catch them from falling off. She obviously lacks the fine motor skills required to make some herself. I asked her where she got it. Was it the treasure box at school? Was it the teacher? A para? A buddy? True to her notsoverbalness, I just got a smile and clapping. She loves it and it doesnt matter where it came from. What matters, is that being disabled often means being left behind peers normal pace of trends and development. Addie has very few typical kid friends. Maybe you realize the little things that make a kid fit in are quite little. The cut of their hair, the style of shoe, a goofy bracelet. Her PT clued me in on Thursday that these are called Rainbow Looms and they are all the rage. That bracelet did this....it lept Addie into the present with her peers, even though she is not giggling at an overnite slumber party or flitting off to a Friday night movie. If your kids are making these, consider asking them to make some for the special needs kids in their school. Every school has some. Thanks.
