If youre anything like me, Thanksgiving just makes you think of the first chapter in Howard Zinns A Peoples History of the United States. Well for anybody who is interested, there is a GREAT free documentary about Zinn on Netflix and Im embarrassed to admit I had no clue as to how actually legendary this guy was. I knew he was a great historian and have listened to a lot of his lectures. I knew he was brilliant but didnt know anything about him personally. He grew up in poverty as his dad had only a 4th grade education. He read books voraciously though and put himself through grad school at Columbia while working to support a wife and two kids. He took his first teaching job at a black college in the South (Spelman) during the early 1960s. He supported his students in Civil Rights demonstrations which eventually cost him his job. He began teaching at Boston University where he then helped organize the movement in opposition to the war in Vietnam. Oh and thats the part of the movie where I fell asleep so I cant tell you much more about his life after that but that was only about 20 minutes into the film so it must have been pretty damn juicy! Im finishing it now. Happy Thanksgiving, fellow humans. KTrof, the pie was delicious!
