If youre doing the last of your Christmas shopping now, and your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend or whatever left in the last year, thats one person you dont have to buy for, so instead of just feeling the loss is there a way you can do something different? I was a bit sad over the last couple of days because this is my first Christmas without my husband. Then I remembered that means I didnt need to buy a whacking great turkey. Instead, I took the cost of a turkey and spent that on a couple of families I didnt know. If you buy the own brand products, and you think in terms of actual ingredients rather than ready meals, you can feed two or three families (say ... a mum and a couple of small kids for instance) for a couple of days for the price of a decent sized turkey. It wasnt until I got to the place where the donations for the food bank go that I realised Id bought about twice as much stuff as had been donated by everyone in the store ALL DAY! The place was packed and as everyone jostled past me to get out with their goodies, none of them put so much as a tin of food in the box. I looked at people heaving out trolleys full of more food than theyd be able to eat before it went off and wondered what would happen if a few more people just went last minute Christmas shopping for a family or two that they didnt know. They wont get the food until after Christmas, probably, but as someone who went through not having enough food to live on in the recession, I know it would have meant so much to me if someone had just given me some rice or porridge oats or something. Its cold out there, guys. If people are struggling to keep warm theyve got to eat well. Hypothermia is way more easy to avoid if youve got a belly full of porridge. I speak from experience. If you feel inclined to go out there and help someone, its not too late to do that before you hear the sound of reindeer bells.... Happy Christmas everyone. xxx
