If you’re joining us in reading through Isaiah and Jeremiah today’s passage is Isaiah 33. And the devotion is taken from 33:14-15. “The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: “Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?” He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil— this is the man who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him.” Here Isaiah gives a comparison between those who are sinners and those who are righteous. Criminals cower when they are judged by one in authority. They know that they have a problem. They know that they are wrong. They know they’re about to be judged. They ask the question who can be righteous? Isaiah answers the question by giving the characteristics of the righteous person. The righteous person walks in faith, he or she speaks what is right, he or she rejects extortion and bribes. He stops his ears from hearing plots of murder and shuts his eyes from contemplating evil. A righteous person is someone who’s focused is on the commander Deuteronomy 6:4-“you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and always mind and all your soul.” This is a person who focuses on that which is right not that which is wrong. And what does that look like from a positive side. The righteous person lives by the faith principle, he trusts in God to provide the path in which he is to walk and then he walks in it. His business dealings and dealings with those who are in authority are aboveboard and clearly righteous. He doesn’t use the excuse that everybody does it or that’s just the way that you get business done he plays by the rules and he was righteously. Finally, he doesn’t even contemplate evil. It is easy for us to let our minds wander and to envision ways that we can get back at someone. We go over in our minds ways that we can respond that will put us on top and make the other person pay for what they’ve done to us. The person of righteousness doesn’t seek revenge, he or she seeks forgiveness.
