If you’re joining us in reading through the Psalms and Proverbs today’s passages are Psalm 55 and 56. The devotion is taken from Psalm 56:3-4. “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise-in God I trust and I’m not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” What do you do when you feel afraid? Do you hold tightly to somebody’s hand? Do you close your eyes, cover your face or hide? All of these things would be a natural response to being afraid. David has another response. David says that he will put his trust in God. He will rely on God to bring you through the stressful situation. There is a reason for this trust and that is that David knows God’s word. Unless you know about somebody you can’t really trust them. Unless you have a relationship with them you can’t rely on them to bring you through the stressful situation. The only way that David would know how to trust God, was the first know his word. What a comfort God’s word is when we are in a fearful situation. We can have confidence in the power and the goodness of God to bring us through whatever we are facing. It’s interesting to note that David ends verse four with the question, what can mere mortals do to me? Look at the contrast. David can trust in God because of his power. He can deny his foes power over him because in reality mortals really cannot hurt him. God has a power to bring us through every situation that we are in. He isn’t going to leave us dangling and twisting in the air. He’s going to protect us. He is going to give us guidance through both his word and through the Holy Spirit. We don’t have to fear any man because God is our protector. The next time you’re in a situation that the hair on the back of your neck is standing up remember what David says in Psalm 56:3. We are to trust God we are to lean on him totally. He is our rock and stability. Nothing mankind can do can hurt us.
