If you’ve immigrated already, while it’s not a bad thing to still care about what’s going on in Hong Kong, you shouldn’t only follow what’s happening there all the time. If you’re living in Quebec or Ontario, say you go online 8 hours daily, why don’t you use four hours reading Chinese articles about the problems in Hong Kong and China, and spend 4 hours following what’s happening around Canada, Ontario, and Toronto? For example, the mayor of Toronto, [Rob Ford], is being criticized for drug use. This this a topic that your neighbourhood is discussing. Also, there’s a Chinese person [Olivia Chow] running for the mayor...These are topics that allow you to blend into the mainstream, and you’ll eventually get used to it. But if you move to Toronto, but still want to live the lifestyle you had in Wan Chai (a district in Hong Kong), then sorry, you mentality will never be adjusted.… What is loneliness? When you go to the rural areas of Canada and Great Britain, everyone is “lonely.” But this isn’t lonely, it’s called “inner concentration.” You’ve to understand, after immigrated, you’ve to throw out those mentality in the past like torn clothing, such as the endless noise in Hong Kong, feeling uneasy without any activities all day, feeling that Hong Kong left you behind if you don’t receive any messages on Whatsapp, or feeling marginalized if nobody’s having dinner party with you for a day or two. Are the small towns in Canada boring? Yes, but the people who are living there should be dying of boredom. Why can that old lady live there all her life? You should try finding out. Who is the Prime Minister of Canada? Stephen Harper. What kind of a person is he? A conservative, on the political right. He pulled a fast on the Chinese community. When he was courting for the Chinese vote [in the 2006 federal election], he publicly said that he’d apologize for the Government of Canada charging a Head Tax on Chinese immigrant in the past. But after coming into power, he’s the person who decided to cancel the investment immigration program. Now, this is politics. Also, he recently visited South Korea [and sign a bilateral free trade agreement]. In order to do business, he called South Korea “a light of democracy.” When you go to a new place, why don’t you better understand the premiers, mayors, the prime minister of the country, people who will have important relations with your life? Why are you still following the news about [Hong Kong Chief Executive] CY Leung? You should flush out the CY Leung administration like a toilet, but don’t flush out Hong Kong. The psychological state of Hong Kong immigrants [that they religiously follow the news in Hong Kong, and find out the decline of Hong Kong since 1997, in order to prove that the boredom that came with immigrating to Canada wasn’t in vain] is worth researching...because their minds are like a pendulum. When they’re in Hong Kong, they complain that it’s too crowded, and the air is too polluted, and want to return to Canada. Once they return to Canada, they want to go back to Hong Kong, because Canada is too empty and boring. ~ Chip Tsao, analyzing the psychology of Hong Kong immigrants to Canada, on the 15/03/2014 edition of Summit.
