#IfIHadAChurch If I had a church this morning my congregation and I would be turning our attention to the teachings of probably the most enlightened human being of our time, Mr. Eckhart Tolle. I have admitted this before, and that is out of all the books and works of spiritual leaders and mystics that I have read such as Neal Donald Watch author of the well-known conversations with God and the amazing spiritual teacher Karen Armstrong and many more. I have never been as challenged spiritually (if there is such a term) as I have by all of Eckhart Tolle’s teachings. Not a week goes by without me listening to his audio books or reading , his books have quite literally become my bible and yet I come a little short of grasping the essence of his teachings. Some days I do and some days I don’t grasp a thing. You see Tolle is taking us where I think none of the spiritual teachers that I have heard about and read about took us. Well To a certain extent they did try because at the core of their teachings is that we ought to go within for salvation, that we are a part of God and not separate from God, that we are one with God and all there is, that indeed we are Gods - That has always been the essence of their teachings. Tolle is doing the same except he is taking it not just one or two gears up but almost 10 gears up. Let’s take for an example one of his main lessons which says we are not our minds. Tolle is adamant that our biggest enemy in our lives right now is the thinking mind. He says the constant chatter and relentless thinking nonstop of the mind is what is stopping us from BIENG, from enlightenment, from knowing God. This is of course not new information since a lot of people who teach us to meditate allude to it. The difference with Tolle is that he does not think 20 minutes of meditation in the morning is enough, it certainly does helps but it’s not enough. He believes we can lead completely normal and in fact fruitful and productive lives if we could just stop thinking. And how do we stop thinking? Well, we only have to focus on the present moment, here and now. Yes whatever it is your are doing now, focus on that. He says the past and the future are illusions that rob us from the now. He says we can achieve whatever it is we want to achieve as long as we focus and keep our attention on the NOW. I can almost sense your confusion too. I feel the same way. For those who are not familiar with Eckhart Tolle’s work you can sit this one out and read comments if there are any, or better still you can google him. Those who have read his books and listened to his audio can you share where you are in your understanding of Eckhart’s work. Do you get him, are you applying some of his teachings, has he changed you in anyway?
