Iggy Azalea.... that concept of If a black person does it, its bad, mediocre, low class. But if a white person does it, its cool, trendy, high class, and oh, I dont know MARKETABLE. Examples: Do you know that song Hound Dog Elvis Presley came out with in 1955? Do you know the original artist who sang it? Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Who got the MOST praise?....Hmmm That is white privilege. I never saw so many white girls twerking until Miley Cyrus starting doing it. They werent into it before when black girls had been doing for years. That is white privilege. What about Iggy Azalea? She becomes so marketable because shes this white girl with a black rapping voice. When everything that she raps about, some black people rap about all the time. But I never see them becoming marketable. I guarantee you, if Iggy Azalea was a black girl from Australia, coming to America to rap with a ghetto accent other than her own, she wouldve NEVER been as marketable as she is now. That is white privilege. Dont get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with being a white rapper. Just be comfortable being the white person surrounded by black people. Dont try to be that black sounding white guy just because youre surrounded by blacks. If you grew up in Australia, dont rap like you were raised in the ghetto in America sorrounded by blacks who talk like you try to rap. Be yourself, respect the history, and acknowledge your white privilege. Thats the difference between Iggy Azalea in comparison to Macklemore or Eminem. They are being themselves, they respect the history, and they ACKNOWLEDGE their privilege. Iggy Azalea does NONE of those things. Ive heard some Australian rap before. Listen to Maya Jupiter, Illy, or Briggs. NONE of them try to imitate that American ghetto southern accent that comes naturally to some southern rappers in America. Southern rappers are considered low class by pop culture when they sound while according to the same people, Iggy Azalea sounds awesome with it. Clearly to me Iggy Azalea is only here to make money, NOT because she actually cares about Hip Hop and its legacy. She is beautiful, and Im pretty sure she isnt evil. But she is obviously the epitome of cultural appropriation and she doesnt even recongnize it. Thats why people are angry at her. The New Classic my ass :l
