Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: - TopicsExpress

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. - Charles Darwin. This quote aptly describes many individuals involved in selling aquaponic systems and it truly represents our struggle to expand aquaponics into mainstream farming. I have heard many times, outrageous statements made by these people in the race to climb to the top of an imaginary commercial aquaponic ladder. None of the statements are backed by any science but more of a feeling or a belief. These emotions belong to a church, they will not make you money. Yet none of them can provide any proof of successful commercial enterprises they have designed and installed but arrogantly they still claim to be commercial consultants. Virtually all of the attempts at commercial aquaponics have been a dismal failure and it is only a matter of time before we see many more. This is not inherent of commercial aquaponics but a disease created by popularity of individuals that lack the know how required to design and build commercial aquaponic systems. This hobbles all new ideas. In particular aquaponics is prone to those with very little knowledge because most want to believe they can build a successful farm themselves. The catalyst in this paradigm is those teaching, selling or in any way marketing aquaponics that rely on you believing you dont need any science knowledge to be successful. The other issue is the speed at which information can be disseminated on the internet. There is no discrimination. You will get the good and the bad and most will not know which is what. This creates a belief that information should be open source and freely available to everyone regardless of the quality. My advice is, if someone wants to sell you a commercial aquaponic system and can not provide any verifiable science or examples of success, keep your money or buy a swimming pool or a boat if you want an expensive job and want to throw good money after bad.
