Ignoring ! The number of times Ive heard people casually talking, saying... If you ignore a dogs bad (unacceptable) behaviour, itll stop doing it. It doesnt work for jumping up, barking and a lot of other things does it ? Try it ! Where did this idea spring from ? There are a few circumstances where ignoring your dog will have the effect of saying to the dog... That wont be happening ! and it will lose interest in trying. For those its the right approach. But this has been grabbed and applied in some circles to every unacceptable nuisance behaviour ! And it plays into the hands of the busy and tired, and those looking for easy ways out (like I used to be !) because you dont have to do anything ! But it doesnt work. Only last week I was at a clients home. She had paid $150 for a trainer to come out, have a chat over a cup of tea with her, mainly about her lovely garden (!) and then offer her the magnificent advice of: The secret is to just ignore him when he barks at the neighbours fence and hell stop it. She pointed out that apart from shouting at the dog sometimes, thats what the whole family had been doing for nearly 3 years now. The therapist was gone in under 30 min. Her burden had not been lightened. But her wallet had. Amazing. And not an isolated incident, I can tell you.
