Ill be in flight about this time to arrive home from the National Academy Foundation conference in DC. I learned so much and Im glad I was chosen to be part of the team to further improve the education of my students. When the conference ended, my best friend since 4th grade all the way through high school picked me up and hosted me for the next few days. I had so much fun. I met all three of his beautiful and smart children, his friendly and cool wife and a few of his long time friends that he attended West Point with. What a blast as we sat around dinner and talked about so many things laughing and sharing stories. On Sunday, I had that little accident that gave me a good size bruise on my inner thighs. I described the predicament to my wife and what I looked like and she was a bit concerned. Im ok though. After lunch we headed to do the tourist thing and started at the town of Alexandria. It was a cool town with a waterfront portion along the Potomac River. The weather was warm. After some ice cream, we drove around to a few other places including the US Marine Corp Memorial, the newer Air Force memorial and the Pentagon. It was very cool. However the Arlington Cemetery was probably my favorite. It was massive, much more grand than I thought. We walked around the grounds viewing the markers of more than 300K soldiers dating back to the first person, William Henry Christman. So many have given their lives for our country and I was a little taken back. Sadly, there is plenty of room available for the next set of burials, unfortunately. I wish it wasnt the reality. This trip opened my eyes in different ways. I created new friendships and reconnected with old ones. You know its a great friendship when you havent seen someone in years and it never felt that way. Im excited to see my family and spend some much needed quality time. Thanks for following along on my journey.
