Ill begin my stories from my epic Kokoda journey with this one, which was actually on Day 6 of the trek. Brigade Hill was the site of one of the Kokoda campaigns biggest and most horrific battles. The Australian losses were enormous. The bravery seen at this battle match those seen in Gallipoli and Long Tan, however, as PNG was at the time Australian territory, this was the first time a battle occurred in Australia, for Australia. The stories of how the local PNGs, known as the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels saved so many Australians at this battle is of course, legendary. To my amazement I found out at the beginning of my trip that the local PNG guides who came with us on every step of our trek this week were all direct descendants of the actual fuzzy Wuzzy angels of the Kokoda campaign in the war. When we arrived at the stop of Brigade Hill, after a very, very steep 4 hour trek that day and 12 hours a day for the five days previous, we were exhausted, depleted, overwhelmed and emotional as we reached the peak of the mountain to find this : our very own fuzzy Wuzzy angels, standing atop the hill, next to the flags of both our nations and the unmarked graves of our countrymen, singing a hymn of blessing and encouragement. This was a priceless experience and worth every step.
