Ill bore you with another piece of old Carrick information that I found.A petition was lodged in the Irish house of Commons in 1755 recommending that some improvement be carried out to make the Suir a more efficient form of transport .At that time the produce of Co.Tipperary was carried on the Suir--cattle,sheep,butter,corn,and rape -seed,(there was a rape-mill in Ahenny and the seed was exported to Holland) It was argued that it cost from sixteen shillings to one pound to draw a boat from Carrick to Clonmel and the men had organised a trade union ( which was called a combination at that time) to force their employers to pay higher wages. It was suggested that a tow-path be built so that horses could be used to pull the barges upstream giving a saving of two-thirds.The House of Commons voted fifteen hundred pounds for the work in 1756 and in 1761 a committee sat to oversee the work and expenses.this committee sar annually until 1765 when the work was completed. The tow-path from Carrick to Clonmel was built between 1756 and 1765. Now it looks like it will be put to good use again.but Itll probably cost a bit more this time.
