Ill give these books a pass over. The article is worth reading, if you need an introduction to how your mind works or a summary of 2 books that approach the subject in a desultory fashion. theatlantic/magazine/archive/2013/11/why-we-fightand-can-we-stop/309525/ Both Happiness Hypothesis and Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt have more messages, more applications and more scope. Give Robert Wright credit for citing Jonathans paper and succeeding in showing the limits of the current books, which cover some of the ground that Jonathan did. I take the statement that ... our judgments are designed not to be impartial. as a point of departure. There are designers for our minds. At issue is whether or not we want to get involved with that process. Meditation can attenuate the input from external designers, allow us to issue some instructions and leave us open to so many things. Jonathan develops a more active agenda that also includes meditation. He sees ways to get people more involved with all of society and provides evidence of how that works out. In addition, he explores cognitive strategies that can cope with any bump in the road that we experience. Im wired up to be utilitarian, but follow Jonathan for how to improve my happiness and go through processes that create better messages to pass along.
