Illinois State Police District 6 is advising motorists that traffic northbound on I55 is currently being detoured off the interstate to Illinois Route 116 at the City of Pontiac. A tractor-trailer unit northbound on I55 struck the Vermillion River Bridge just north of Route 116 at approximately 7:45 pm on Sunday. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the State Police and engineers from the Illinois Department of Transportation are inspecting the bridge for structural damage. I55 northbound traffic is being rerouted to Route 116 eastbound, to Old US Route 66 northbound, to Route 23 westbound, and back to I55. Detour signs are posted by IDOT. Traffic is being assisted by State Troopers and Pontiac Police Officers. Southbound traffic on I55 is not affected. It is estimated by IDOT the right lane of I55 northbound over the Vermillion River Bridge will be opened at approximately 3 pm today. The left lane will remain closed for an undetermined length of time as repairs are made. Updates will be provided as further information becomes available.
