Im Nick Byrne and Ive been nominated by Justine Hershkowitz to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket challenge for Leu Gehrigs disease. I proudly accept Justines nomination and I now nominate Kyle Patrick, Farhan Akbar and Megan Smucker to participate as well. Before I pour this bucket down my back I first want to talk about the challenge. A lot of people think that the challenge is stupid. Some people speculate that people arent doing the challenge for the right reasons. In my opinion, whether people are doing this challenge for fun, for donations, for a relative or because its a trend, all that matters are the results. And the results are over a 1000% increase in awareness of the disease since last year, and that to me is awesome. This time last year only $100,000 was raised towards ALS, today we have raised well over 6 million, which is also awesome and that makes the ALS Ice bucket challenge awesome. So no matter why people are doing it, the fact is that theyre doing it and we are all putting a once obscure disease on the map, and we are finally bringing about change! If thats stupid, then you dont have to do it, but please try and keep your ignorance at bay. That being said not many people know that my father was diagnosed this year with ALS. Im a private person and its not something Im 100% comfortable talking about. However, after the amount of support and love Ive seen displayed these past few months it has become a no-brainer that I too have to participate. For my father, for my family, and for every other family and person who is affected by this terrible disease. So this one is for you dad, and as for the people I nominated you have twenty-four hours to either donate or participate or just do both. Remember my dad has ALS, so no pressure at all. And also to everyone watching this, I nominate all of you. Not to just pour cold water over your head, but to learn about the disease, talk about it, raise awareness and go to alsa.org and donate a few dollars if you can God bless yall
