Im a little torn on this Saturday morning. My cousins Useful Jenkins are having their Front Porch Hoedown in Minneapolis at The Cabooze tonight. For the last month Ive been living in a tent in the California woods working on rhymes to wrap around Usefuls music. But me and my friend Debi Svare are going up to Fargo today. 11 years ago Kanser music was riding a small side tent stage on the Warp Tour. We met a teenage rapper from North Dakota named Kipp Gabriel. A hyper and happy kid who wanted to freestyle in stead of talk. Kipp became one of our most reliable allies. He opened the door for Kanser, More Than Lights, Ernest Rhodes, Carnage, PROF & Rahz, and some of the Doomtree homies to play shows through our neighbor state to the west. Kipp might have the purest love for hip hop of anyone I have ever met. On the 6 months couch surf across the country I stayed with Kipp up in Fargo for 2 weeks. Were in our 30s now and I wanted to talk about the books I was reading, the places Id traveled, trying to grow as a person. All Kipp wanted to talk about was battle rapping Supposedly, Kipp has decided to release the microphone and is playing his final show tonight in Fargo. Maybe its a Jay Z, Black album publicity stunt, I dont know. But you know were all growing up. One of the dopest rap groups I ever heard in my life, the Crest, is coming out of retirement to play Kipps last show. Who remembers when the Crest used to come to Minneapolis and tare the Dinkytowner apart? Those packed sweaty Dinkytowner nights with raw raps dripping from the ceiling.
