Im almost always overcome by the time/effort/love required to prepare the mansion for Christmas each year. (of course the staff is off on their annual holiday in the Balkans) I always seem to flashback to the 50/60s when Mom and Dad would decorate Mark St. for the season...Mom was a knitting machine cranking out hats and mittens and sweaters so wed all be warm on those frosty mornings...the Peter Paul Candy sample boxes that wed all get because Grandma Varhol gifted all the kids a few shares of stock in that Naugatuck company. Dad staying up till all hours assembling bicycles, dollhouses, Mom arranging the gifts under the tree so theyd look just right. Im sure theyd barely gone to sleep when us kids would come charging down the stairs to see what Santa had brought us. The excitement and wonder in our eyes...the memories. And I realize why I do what I do each Christmas eve. Its for the kids and grandkids in my life...to see that sparkle in their eyes once again. For us all to be together and to feel that family still exists, resting still and quiet in all of our hearts. Its Christmas, a time to remember the birth of the little baby Jesus, and a time to find the kid again in all of us. love, T
