Im ashamed this is the policy of my country. Im shocked the Department of Immigration thinks its appropriate to propagate such a callous, offensive and inhumane message. Australia is a developed country and has the fifth largest GDP per capita in the world. Australia ranks 233rd in the world when it comes to population density and ranks second on the Human Development Index. Yet, Australia ranks 49th on overall refugee intake and 69th on a per capita basis; thats behind Iran, Yemen, Ecuador, Rwanda, Ireland, Denmark, Venezuela, Uganda, Zambia, Togo and Kyrgyzstan, just to name a few. Australia was an original signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Australia is a signatory to the International Covenant of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and of Civic and Political Rights. Australia has ratified the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its Optional Protocol of 1967. Despite this, Australia continues to enforce and support heinous immigration and detention policies that breach international law and more crucially human rights. immi.gov.au/Live/Pages/refugees/no-way.aspx
