Im blown away. It just doesnt seem real. This man brought so much joy. His films and live performances speak for themselves but Ive loved his work since I was a little kid in the 70s. Everything shut down in my familys house so my sisters and I could watch Mork & Mindy after dinner. Many moons later, when I moved to Los Angeles as a struggling musician, those first few years were often very challenging, both financially and spiritually. I lived one block away from the Virgin Megastore (now long gone) on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood. When things got rough, I would often walk to the Megastore just to visualize and dream, to surround myself with art and aspiration. A lot of times, I couldnt afford to buy anything so I would just stand at the magazine rack and read about the people I admired who were living the life I wanted to live. The layout of that store used to get rearranged pretty frequently but there was one point when the magazine rack was right by the main entrance. One night, I was there reading and dreaming and I felt someone looking at me. I looked up and there standing just a few feet from me in the doorway was none other than Robin Williams. He had obviously just been shopping and was carrying handled bags in both hands. We both stood there for a second and then he gave me this beaming, all-knowing smile that said, Dont worry, kid. Youll get there. Then he slowly turned and exited stage right. It was a moment right out of Dead Poets Society or Good Will Hunting, or even a silent classic by Charlie Chaplin (to whom, in my view, Robin Williams was probably the most legitimate heir of the last 40 years). Anyhow, Ill always cherish the memory. It really made me feel better. I thank him for that and, of course, for the lifetime of laughter and inspiration that he brought to the world through his AWESOME catalog of work. Performers who arent even born yet are in for one helluva treat studying Robin Williams. Rest in peace, Captain.
