Im currently working on a HUMOUNGOUS Deep Purple (1968-1976) project which involves a lot of research, reading, transcribing and listening to their music. These are the times Im really glad I got into music journalism and DP were without a doubt the start of an amazing journey for me.When I started writing writing at SOUNDS Heavy Rock was the least popular and least respect of genres at the paper which left a huge open field for this over excited 17 year.So to be offered a trip to catch the new line up live in Belgium was an offer beyond my wildest dreams. Now as most people know Deep Purple are one of my all time favourite bands and In Rock is probably my favourite album of all time.I never got to see Deep Purple Mk 2,although I tried (thats another story) so to see the new line up in its infancy was mind blowing.Ill never forget that moment they hit the stage with the new albums opening number Burn,it immediately affirmed that this was a bigger and better band that left with the half hearted sawn song of Who Do We Think We Are.I was already a huge fan of Glenn Hughes who I had seen countless times with TRAPEZE but David Coverdale was an unknown entity and Ian Gillan Official Site was a hard act to follow, but Burn put all worries aside.Ritchie Blackmore Official Site was very astute in picking these two very different singers. Also songs like Mistreated showed that the band were taking a much more bluesy direction. The enthusiasm and energy of the whole band was breathtaking. The band took a huge risk playing material from an album that no one heard but the new songs sounded like established classic.A very young Lars Ulrich had been at the bands Copenhagen show a couple of days and both of us have many a time shared the joyous experience of seeing Purple at one of their peaks. That night in Belgium was also the first I got to meet Ritchie Blackmore, who I regard as one of the best guitarist of all times, and it was honour to share so many experience with this living legend. Sounds motto was: MUSIC IS MESSAGE,and Deep Purple embodied that spirit…
