Im definitely for changing this. In my mind, what separates sports (or any other game or competition) from the rest of life is fairness according to the rules. The parameters of play are well-defined and are called as objectively as possible within the confines of human (and increasingly, video) competence. In the case of necessarily subjective and arbitrary rules, oversight is a must. With stoppage time, the rule is arbitrary but there is no oversight, and so there is no incentive for the referee to rule in any particular manner, and that is a bad system. Tradition for traditions sake is even fine, except when there is an objectively better system available.
