Im early today because I wanted to share something with you. I have just gotten off the bus to the train station and met an amazing woman on the bus. I was reading on my Kindle app when she sat next to me. She must have been nearly 6ft in height and at 5ft I felt a bit dwarfed. After a few minutes this broad Geordie twang echoed through the bus, OMG your reading on your phone, thats fantastic I just smiled at her and tried to shrink into my seat. Rummaging in her bag she pulled a book out want to see what Im reading? She demanded. Why does this always happen time I thought. Trying to smile I turned to decline and she thrust her book under my nose. HORRID HENRY. I was shocked and looked up at her. She was in her 50s at least. Shocked ya didnt I she grinned. I just nodded not knowing what to say. Im 52 and Im learning to read and I want everyone to know I smiled at her, her joy was contagious. She didnt wait for a reply. My Mam didnt make me go to school, she wanted me to look after me little brother so she didnt have to, by the time I was grown I was too thick to do it so I got a job cleaning, and thats what I did. at this point the whole bus was listening. Even me kids didnt know, but me new boss wanted me to fill in some forms and I couldnt. I ended up crying. Then you know what, instead of sacking me she sent me to college. Thats where kmgoing now. You know what? I shook my head. I couldnt read a bedtime story to my kids, just used to make something up, but nowt is gonna stop me reading to my grandkids. Then Im getting one of them book apps on my phone. With that declaration she jumped up and smiled as she jumped off the bus and bounced down the hill to college. I felt overwhelmed, then as I looked at my phones darkened screen I smiled and glanced at the woman opposite. An smaing woman, full of joy for something I take for granted. So my gratitude today is for having met her, for her teachers for opening up a whole world for her but most of all for her amazing boss for not sacking her!
