Im going to draw a connection between that last post and diet and fitness. You can compare the two parts of the road and say that one is worse than the other. Bumpier, worse for your car, not as safe etc. You can say that driving to one house will take longer than driving to the other. You can say you feel safer or more comfortable on one part of the road than the other However, youd be mistaken to say that one house is further away than the other. In nutrition you can say that the macronutrients (Carbs Protein and fat) have different affects on the body. You can say that the components of these macronutrients also have different affects (1 amino acid may act differently than the other). You can say that you feel better eating one over the other, that you like one over the other.. whatever But a Calorie is a calorie in the same manner that a mile is a mile. Again I know its semantics, but in any good discussion or debate, you need to define your terms first, so that everyone is on the same page. Are all macronutrients equal in the way they influence human physiology? No of course not. Do all the different types/components of any one macronutrient have similar influence on the body? No of course not, there is a wide away of ways the body responds to different kinds of proteins, or carbs, or fats... But the Calorie, a measurement of energy... the amount of energy you are describing when you use the word Calorie has to be the same, otherwise the term is meaningless... So the saying a calorie is a calorie does not (or should not) imply that proteins, carbs and fats all have the same affect on human physiology. The term has been misappropriated. In other words if you say all calories arent equal I have no idea how to respond... because I dont know if are actually questioning the calorie as a unit of energy, or if youre using the word calorie in place of food or macro nutrient. But, if you say all foods arent equal then I think we could have a rational discussion on the topic of nutrition. The two parts of the road are different in a number of qualities, but they were both a mile long.
