Im going to make myself a bit vulnerable here so please go gentle. Im vegan and dont believe in killing animals or benefiting from their death when possible (unless to save a human life or fulfill a mandatory mitzvah like tefillin). I do, however, kill bugs from time to time (when I cant just capture and release them) and I feel a lot of guilt about this. When they may be dangerous, I feel fine with it (protecting myself and my family). But sometimes they are not dangerous and are merely a nuisance. My values tells me this is wrong even though my instincts drive me to quickly remove them from our home or work-space. Friends, who are sensitive to the pain of sentient beings & who believe that each being should be allowed to live its one short existence in full, please advise on your feelings & approaches. Perhaps I am just being weak (from a utilitarian perspective, my burden from the fly doesnt compare to the loss of the flys one shot at existence). This is a real moral challenge for me. Oh and check out this piece in the NYT from yesterday: opinionator.blogs.nytimes/2014/11/15/on-smushing-bugs/?_r=0
