Im going to start with a warning that these images are incredibly graphic and show death and carnage. These are pictures that I personally took, I personally witnessed, or members of my platoon took on mission I was a part of. This is the reality of the Iraq sectarian violence that took place circa 2006-07 in Baghdad. The reason why I post these is for all of you Americans out there that are now completely up in arms over the sectarian violence directed at Christians in northern Iraq at the hand of ISIS fighters. Ive seen little girls shot in the legs as a humane alternative to the rest of her family being gunned down in their living room. Ive seen old men, half blind and crippled, gunned down in the street on their way back from the market. Ive seen men handcuffed and executed by the police. Ive seen homes torched to drive people from a neighborhood. But you probably paid no attention because they didnt share the same religion as you. This isnt a new phenomenon in Iraq and I will go so far as to say that if you mind when Christians are killed by Muslims, but not when Muslims are killed by Muslims, youve missed the root of whatever religion you profess to adhere to. The first photos are intentionally black to hide the worst unless you want to see it.
