Im just reading this story in the NYT ( Always my preferred way to absorb the news ) its so good. What I just gleaned from this op Ed is the importance of studying children very little ones who are just learning about the world. How they focus is so fascinating. Take my little man, Ry. One year old. When he meets someone new he stares on their faces. For many minutes. He doesnt smile. He studies their eyes their mouths. Hes not listening. He scans their faces like a high tech machine. He commits faces to his memory where it is stored for future use. He is so observant it can be unnerving. Perhaps his eye is a camera. Perhaps he wont need to use the clumsy heavy black boxes like we do. I love children for their utter honesty. People who try to get along with everyone and say polite things just to be liked or accepted are an anathema to me. Perhaps bc like Ry I see into and through people. I smell them like dogs do. Time is precious. Our lives are a wash with meaningless distractions. We have to make good on our promises to ourselves as well as to others. Pay attention to who and what really matters. Find your joy and dont hesitate to share it. Honor the child in you.
