Im just rephrasing her words but Adichie in this crucial TED Talk examines the dangers of having one single narrative on behalf of an entire race, continent, or even country. The single story strips people of their dignity and instills in us, Literature leaders and media consumers, shameful stereotypes. We, despite globalization, still have a hard time thinking that not all Africans are dying of hunger, that some of them are well educated, and that some honestly did have beautiful childhoods. Moreover, when we use the word Africa we tend to reduce this whole continent into one concept, one region, one of which has many trees and is horribly primitive. Though we are Arabs (Not having any Phoenician arguments lovelies, sorry) and are experts on being stereotyped against (though sometimes we earn it) we do some stereotyping ourselves. Nevertheless, we can draw a parallel between what she is saying and the image of the Middle East offered to us in Western Media. All in all, this is a powerful talk. She is powerful.
