Im looking for opinions and input from readers, authors and publishers. Just read an article that Sony may be re-entering the ebook market, but this time with a platform to sell used ebooks. This is a concept that has been around for quite a few years, but never worked out logistically. Ebooks are (generally) quite a bit less expensive than print books--largely because they dont have a production cost beyond the initial editing and formatting (which can itself be a decent cost). But . . . they also dont wear out. Theoretically, if a publisher and author receive no royalties from used ebooks, they could be depending on those first few ebook sales to recoup costs, because the originally ebook purchases could be resold indefinitely. This would drive up the cost of ebooks to the consumer and may even make them unaffordable. Who in their right mind would pay $20 or more for a first edition ebook? I think the concept is interesting, but I think that industry professionals and legislators need to sit down and talk about setting it up in a way that doesnt screw the authors and publishers. This would be a brutal hit to Indie Publishers especially, since they are the ones who generally achieve high sales by pricing their books low. the-digital-reader/2014/10/30/sony-developing-new-ebook-drm-platform-exploring-idea-used-ebooks-sales/?et_mid=700948&rid=240879590#.VFJXBfnF-sw
