Im not an anime fan, but there are some things I like. Captain Harlock is my favorite. The character is essentially a Romanticist-style character. A renegade in a totalitarian futuristic Earth who turns into a pirate to fight against tyranny. Hes always been portrayed as courageous and idealistic ever since Leiji Matsumoto created him in the early 70s. Well... in this new movie, a reboot of sorts... the idealistic and noble Captain Harlock ends up wiping all life on Earth. Massive genocide. Because the new director wanted to have a flawed character. So he turned a great character into ... an absolute monster. The saddest bit of all?
