Im not posting this as an endorsement of Governor Snyder. But, because for years Ive been saying that we need to reach out to those kids who have an interest that falls into the skilled trade industry. Our schools do so much to push college forgetting that there are some who just arent cut out for the academia world. Many have heard me tell the story of a senior on my bus a few years back who, quite frankly, hated school. Nearing graduation, he had no plans. I had a chance to ask him what one class did he like. He responded that he really loved welding. I told him he could go to a trade school and learn about that. The following fall, his girlfriend passed along a message from this boy which thanked me for giving him the info about welding. He had enrolled in a welding class at MCC and loved it. We need to guide ALL our kids to excel in their strengths, even if its outside the academic box.
