Im not sure I would go as far as saying the EU never wanted - TopicsExpress

Im not sure I would go as far as saying the EU never wanted Ukraine as a member. Cameron certainly does. The Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area is precisely what is says it is, bringing regulatory harmonisation in all areas of government from meat-processing through to airspace and democratic/judicial reforms. Thus far, no country has ever gone a stage further than this without then becoming a candidate state, preparing to join the EU. This was the route taken by Bulgaria and Romania. The DCFTA was the final push before the accession process, and the EU (or rather Germany) instigated regime change to attain it (as Mr ONeill rightly pointed out in February). So the premise that the EU didnt want Ukraine as a member doesnt really stand. We are looking at EU expansionism. It certainly looks like the EU is no friend to Ukraine having gone as far as regime change (and rail-roading the DCFTA) - and then offering nothing substantive in the way of defence against the inevitable Russian reaction, instead opting to hide under Americas skirt. The EU is all mouth and no trousers. What is interesting is the double standard, in that the same red lines that prevented Ukraine becoming a candidate state were not applied to either Romania or Bulgaria, and those same fault-lines still exist - much like the economic tests that should by rights have prevented Greece from joining the Euro. As to the rest, the script is already written. Howsoever, really good to see a solid piece of reporting from Spiked whose coverage of Ukraine thus far has surpassed any other British outlet. Not that this is saying much (given the standard set) as Im sure youd agree.
