Im often asked why I do what I do to help the homeless. When you read the letter below youll know why my heart is so committed to helping my friends that happen to be living on the streets. I need your help, I need your backpacks, hats, gloves, blankets, socks, scarves, hygiene products and anything else that you can think that my friends that are living on the street would like. Love David A2J Hi everyone my name is Rupert. Im a homeless man from Oklahoma City. Being homeless does not mean Im dumb, or incapable of getting on a computer and writing a letter. Homelessness has nothing to do with the mind and everything to do with a situation. I am schizophrenic and cannot hold a job due to my illness. Id all but given up on humanity because everybody that sees me, looks down upon me like Im some piece of trash. I served in the military for 12 years and did so with pride. I am sorry today that I have mental conditions that will not allow me to hold a job. Oklahoma City is in the Midwest and its very cold right now actually it is very frigid. I been staying in a sewer system where its warm and coming out when it warms up during the day. About a week ago I had the opportunity of meeting a man that change my perspective on life, and how other people actually have the capacity to be kind and loving. This man was from one spark, and he rolled in our town looking for homeless people to help. They had 300 backpacks in the trailer and tons of love in their heart. They pulled up where I was sitting on the bench and asked me if I would like to have a backpack filled with love. The crazy man named Dave jumped out of the truck and said give me a hug. I asked him what the hell he was thinking and what he was doing because I dont hug anybody. Dave looked me in the eyes and said I can see you need a hug and I got one for you today. He said if you want my backpack filled with love you must give me a hug. I smiled and hugged the man and did not want to let go. I held on for dear life because it was the first hug that Id had in many years. I asked Dave why he was handing out backpacks filled with love. His response to me was why shouldnt I be handing out backpacks a love? Dave open the backpack and inside was a beautiful scarf, hat, gloves, chicken of the Sea tuna, toothbrush, toothpaste, Chapstick and many other necessities that we need for day-to-day living. There was also an envelope with a smiley face with three dollars inside. David I sat and talked for a while and then he asked me where the rest of the homeless people are at, and if I would take him to them to head out the backpacks I hope. I hope Dave hand out the backpacks for 2 1/2 hours. This was the best day of my life being able to serve other people in need. I told Dave that I really like tuna, and he said that chicken of the Sea was donating a lot of tuna to go into their backpacks. I said what you mean that theyre going to? He said its on its way, or being packed up, and will get to us sometime soon. I asking where this tuna came from and he set I went into Sams and I bought all the chicken of the Sea I could get. He told me of what awesome things chicken of the Sea had done with their money and I began to cry. I often feel like people dont care about people that are on the streets. Today I have a renewed hope in America and in people, because of my friend Dave. Ive never met a man so passionate about helping others. I also never met a man that would go to any link to help us homeless people and needy people on the streets. I had $3.12 in my pocket, plus the three dollars it David given me in a bag. I put my other $3.12 into the bag and told Dave I wanted to give it to him so he can help somebody else. At first he told me no, he would not take my money. I told Dave please do not rob me of the chance to have the joy of giving. For all you people that are thinking about giving this holiday season. Please take the time to check out Dave and one spark because I know that they will use the money wisely. Love Rupert
