Im on a bus for 6 hours with only my bitter thoughts, so Im going to unload them onto Facebook right now, and Im even going to change my privacy setting to, get this, Public. It just feels too convenient for me to stay out of it and let my news feed accumulate more nonsense. Hopefully Ill avoid sounding like Fritz the Cat walking into the Harlem bar, but he wasnt bad, just dumb, and I can deal with that. (Couldnt find a link to the clip, just watch it) I think its important to not focus on the extent of anger on the part of people you dont know and cant possibly understand. Or at least you cant possibly understand without having made any effort. The best thing you can do is to make that effort to understand and trust the fact that villainous characters who act simply on aggression without any reason dont actually exist. If they do, you are reading a horrible comic that will be out of print soon. No, I dont think violence should be used in these protests, but I try to keep in mind that its easy for me to say that when I basically never encounter violence or aggression in my life, and I certainly never encounter it from my police and my government. I forget which friend of mine posted this article I read, but it explained that the difference between prejudice and racism is that even though everyone can be prejudice, racism is the special blend of prejudice + power. Although that isnt the dictionary definition I found it a very thought provoking and helpful way to look at things. That power can be both, and often is both, the power to enforce your prejudices and the power to ignore them when its upsetting and inconvenient. Racism most certainly does still exist. I promise if you allow yourself to believe it does, youll see it. There are many questions in this whole case and many more questionable facts and motives, its a real shame they wont be called out and scrutinized in an actual court. Instead this police shooting will just be one of many that is not recorded, unless the ferguson police choose to volunteer it to the FBI. You did know that right? Police shooting statistics arent recorded. Not even when they kill people. Heres a short well written article in response to the Rodney King verdict if youre interested stanforddaily/2013/01/23/cory-booker-why-have-i-lost-control/ #ferguson
