Im on this walk around my complex when my shoe comes untied, so I stop and take a seat to tie it. Out of the corner of my eye I spot a little flash of light and I take a minute to look. Its a little firefly buzzing around in the dark. Ive always liked fireflies. I spotted this same one a couple of nights ago. Gently caught him and watched him crawl around my palms before going on his way. So I sit for a bit and just watch him again, enjoying his little show. And then it strikes me how sad it is, because I know what that light means. Hes looking for another firefly. Someone like him. Its kind of a metaphor for all the special people in the world, isnt it? Those one-of-a-kinds. Hes out in this field, plenty of other insects crawling and buzzing around with their like. Onlookers like me stop and appreciate his beauty, but in the end hes still lonely with not another firefly in sight. There are fields Ive found where dozens of fireflies are hanging around together. Hes out here every night looking, but if he only knew what I knew hed find another place. All this to say, if youre not finding what you need, you might want to move on. And if youve got what you need, you should probably sit tight. Maybe tomorrow he wont be there. I think that would make me smile.
