Im part of an Anglican FB group. Yesterday one of the most vocal opponents of womens ordination, Alice, had this to say in reference to the Church of England ordaining the first female bishop: With women serving as priests and bishops, it is now possible, and logically must follow, that Anglicans put up images of men when we contemplate Mary and the significance of the Incarnation. (Form does matter, as Plato and Aristotle and many other great thinkers recognize.) When asked to explain, she wrote, he priesthood is derived from the Priest Jesus. If we can have women stand in for the Divine Son, why cant we have men stand in for the Theotokos? When challenged that her logic was not sound, this is how she responded: It is important to consider the origins of the priesthood as a sacrificing office. The priest took life, whereas women are designed to give life. God does not want His people to be confused about life and death. A woman standing at the altar causes confusion in the Church. It is like boiling a baby goat in its mothers milk. Sounds strange to modern ears, but this is how Abraham would have seen this and he would recognize it as a violation of the order of creation.
