Im pleased that the House today passed my resolution on Iraq. The vote was a strong, bipartisan vote of 370-40. My resolution makes one clear statement: If the President decides we should further involve our military in Iraq, he needs to work with Congress to authorize it. I dont know how Congress would respond and vote on such a request. For the record, I want to state - in the strongest possible way - that I think it would be a grave mistake for the United States to re-engage militarily in Iraq. But no matter what your feelings on Iraq, it is essential that Congress step up to the plate and do its job. For far too long, Congress has abdicated its constitutional responsibilities on matters of war and peace. Today, that began to change.
