Im pretty excited about the Mavericks this year. They are playing at a speed we havent seen in a long time. The Championship team were a team of veteran shot-choosers. This team is different. Theyre young and fearless. Sometimes, fearlessness can look like recklessness, evident in their high turnovers. But the pace against the 76ers tonight shows what new legs can bring to the team. Ellis is such a good complement to Dirks style. Their yin/yang balance is fun to watch. Dirk presses in and takes the shots that require his unique perspective in the rare air. Ellis blurs the vision of would-be defenders and surprises big men in the paint with those Theres no way hes driving towards me bursts. Calderon is versatile and therefore, unpredictable. Some nights he scores, some nights he assists. I like him on the floor. Carlisle needs to start fining these guys for avoidable turnovers. At the end of the night, the Mavs had to dig in and defend a 4 point lead. Based on what we saw in the 3rd and 4th quarters, starters should have been on the bench with 2 minutes to go. Thats because they were battling against early sloppy play. Luckily, I believe thats correctable. The young guys will complete their passes and communicate with each other better.
