Im putting together a presentation for my clinic group about childhood obesity, and this video by Jamie Oliver is getting me fired up! When I was in elementary school, I dont recall learning much about food (other than how to say different foods in French and Italian). Nowadays since childhood obesity is so common (more than 30% of children in the US are obese), we need to teach our children about food, and we need to teach parents about food. Yes fast food is convenient, but risks and costs of obesity are not. Our role as doctor as teacher, is to emphasize the importance of healthy eating, the importance of teaching our kids to differentiate beets from celery, and why fresh, colourful food should be always be a staple in our diet.
