Im reading some of the testimony on the this Court Martial that is going on and there seems to be some after-the-fact statements from people, some who are Senior, all the way back to 2010 who either knew or suspected about inappropriate conduct. That is a matter of the Military Court and will all be worked out and whatever justice is handed out, it will be whatever it is. But heres some food for thought: When I was deployed, our Commanding General, a West Point graduate and who was a no-nonsense Commander, would say that in West Point they didnt put up with those who Lie, Cheat or Steal, and he added ...nor those who tolerate it. My Major, who was also a West Pointer and a guy I will forever respect, explained that code to me in detail. I learned in that year those who did tolerate it were just as responsible. For those under his command, this General extended punishments to these Soldiers as well. Yup, punished for knowing others were supposedly doing bad things, investigated, found to be true, didnt turn them in timely and to the proper authority i.e. Commander(s). Not turned in to the IG, not the EO, not the Chaplain, not the SJA, not the Family Support people, not Elected Officials, but turned in to Commander(s) on the ground who have the obligation to look into these matters and do something about it. If you know me, you know I personally despise the self-righteous and genius crusaders. People who have nothing else to do but proclaim themselves Great Americans and complain-kick-scream like big babies. I respected that General because he kept that crap to a minimum, by holding everyone responsible. The lesson was, if its wrong today, it doesnt make it less wrong 3 years (or whenever) from now. If youre going do something about it, do it now before more damage is done. Not when its convenient for you.
