Im really disgusted by the way the NYPD has attempted to turn the Garner verdict protests and this weekends unfortunate police shooting into an us vs. them conflict. I expect this sort of demagoguery from Giuliani and from PBA President Lynch, but the level of dangerous invective coming across the bandwidth right now from every lily white politician and pundit is simply nauseating. The police, like the Sabbath, are there for the people, not the people for the police. We forget this at our peril. And, in what I find most ironic of all, it appears, for these rightwingers at least, that the only acceptable public employees trade union is the PBA. Fear is not a sustainable basis for running a democracy. A great many scaremongers are well-aware of this fact and never miss the opportunity to frighten us all into ceding yet more of our freedoms. Hell, Giuliani has made a fortune on fear, and Peter King a career. But that doesnt make either one a patriot.
